Wayang Kulit Talk Inspires XMUM Community

Shadow of Heritage

The Xiamen University Malaysia Library successfully hosted the “Shadow of Heritage: A Wayang Kulit Talk for World Puppetry Day” on 10 April 2026 at the Library Mini Cinema, A3-Level 1. The event attracted 30 participants, reaching near full capacity and reflecting strong interest among students in traditional performing arts.

The session was delivered by Dr Fiona Wong E Chiong, an academician and researcher from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Sunway University. Drawing from her expertise in Kelantan Wayang Kulit puppet design, she introduced the art form in a clear and accessible manner, making it engaging even for those unfamiliar with the tradition.

Participants were guided through the fundamentals of Wayang Kulit, including its history, cultural significance, and storytelling techniques. The talk also explored the diversity of shadow puppetry across different regions such as Malaysia, Thailand, Bali, Java, Cambodia, China, and Turkey, offering a broader global perspective.

To enrich the learning experience, Dr Fiona showcased a variety of authentic puppets alongside recorded visual materials. A specially arranged setup with spotlight and screen simulated a traditional performance stage, allowing participants to better understand how shadow puppetry is performed. Attendees were given the opportunity to handle the puppets and try basic manipulation techniques, creating a highly interactive and memorable experience.

The session concluded with a token of appreciation and certificate presentation, followed by a group photo session. The event ended successfully at 12:30 PM.

This programme highlights the Library’s continuous effort to promote cultural heritage awareness while providing meaningful and engaging learning experiences for the university community.
