Library Workshop which was held on 27th and 28th May 2019, and participated by 55 libraries’ related staff from over 30 Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools. This event was promoted by United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) and jointly implemented by Xiamen University of Malaysia (XMUM).
There are 60+ Independent Chinese Secondary Schools under the guidance of Dong Zong. How should libraries seek breakthroughs in the transformation of the times? This workshop aims to brainstorm on the increasing needs of today’s readers and how to improve on the library service functions and diversification. As it has become the development direction of libraries around the world to transform the school learning models, this has brought a great impact to the schools’ libraries setup and operation.
This workshop has opened up new practices and focused on the library automated system and application, by introducing the Koha. A worldwide used open source library system for both large libraries and small libraries, participants practiced on the system using the excellent University’s facilities and system in XMUM Library. This workshop has also discussed future trend and actions for the professionalism and operation of the participated school libraries. Through this workshop, the librarians were exposed to fruitful discussions, catalogue exercises and find solutions to the difficulties faced by the libraries on daily operations and services. The speakers who were invited for the two-day course were Ms. Chin Looyu of New Era College, Ms. Loo Soo Fun of Confucian High School, Ms. Chen Juan of XMU China Main Library and Ms. Gan Chin Fung of Chung Hwa High School in Muar.
